One of the most moving auditions in the history of The X Factor USA was given by soulful singer Ashly Williams in 2013. Ashly talked about her tragic past before mounting the stage, disclosing that her mother had been killed when Ashly was just 14 years old. She clarified that she wanted to use her late parent’s impending birthday as motivation to follow her desire of dedicating her performance to her mother’s memory. She started her pre-performance interview with such raw vulnerability that it created an intensely emotional atmosphere for the rest of the interview.
Using Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You,” one of the most challenging songs in the pop canon, Ashly was able to command the audience with a performance that was both technically masterful and emotionally devastating. Judge Kelly Rowland later observed that she “spilled her heart out” on stage rather than simply singing the notes. The judges and the audience were moved by her ability to transform her anguish into such a powerful vocal performance, and many of them stood for a standing ovation long before the last high note.
Simon Cowell famously said that Ashly was the very kind of talent they had brought the show to America to find, and the panel’s comments were largely complimentary. Kelly Rowland commended her for her remarkable singing talent and humility, and Demi Lovato was so delighted that she immediately expressed a desire to mentor her. Ashly advanced to the next round as the front-runner after receiving four enthusiastic “Yes” votes. Her audition is still the best illustration of how a personal sorrow can be turned into a stunning creative achievement.
