Marcin Patrzałek, a Polish guitarist who is eighteen years old, immediately raised the standard when he announced that he had been accepted to an American university while performing on America’s Got Talent stage. As a solo guitarist who didn’t rely on vocals, Marcin had to exhibit a high level of musicality. He demonstrated a very unique technique known as fingerstyle percussive guitar, which blends complex classical skills with repetitive, almost violent drumming, in place of a standard strumming pattern. His distinct approach piqued the interest of both the judges and the audience due to the engaging atmosphere this combination of genres produced.
The performance that followed proved to be an instrumental masterpiece. In a single piece, Marcin used his full acoustic guitar to produce melodic material while simultaneously tapping the body for drum-like beats and plucking bottom lines. He demonstrated a level of maturity and technical competence well beyond his years with his very quick and complex fingerwork. His vibrant and dynamic performance instantly allayed the judges’ concerns about a non-singing act, effectively transforming one instrument into a full band.
The judges’ response was incredibly passionate and emotional. Marcin’s explanation of what the guitar was “invented for” won over even Simon Cowell, who is typically the most critical. He acknowledged that 99 percent of guitarists that audition are not proficient players. “You didn’t play the guitar, you murdered the guitar,” exclaimed fellow judge Howie Mandel, expressing his profound respect for his talent. For this excellent audition, Marcin won four thunderous “yeses,” guaranteeing his promotion in the competition.
