When the medics brought the smart dog to say goodbye to his owner, he suddenly started barking loudly and jumped onto the officer’s bed
The silence in the room was deafening. The feeble glimmer of the hospital lamps hardly illuminated the man’s face as he lay on the bed. Alex, a police officer and hero who had saved numerous lives, was now in the hospital. His body was motionless, and his breathing was hardly audible. Although the machines beeped on schedule, the signs grew increasingly alarming every minute.
Doctors had been fighting for his life for hours. But the wounds were too severe. After several attempts, one of them lowered his eyes and gave a gentle shake of his head.
“It’s done,” he whispered.
The surgeon turned off the monitor. Alex’s heart was no longer beating.
The entire while, a dog had been sitting by the door. Alex has been on many missions with a German shepherd, a service dog. He continued to stare at the door as if he knew his human was in peril. Following the announcement of the death, one of the nurses asked in a tremulous voice:
Could he bid them farewell?
The dog was allowed inside. He walked softly into the room, as if he could sense the seriousness of the situation. He approached the bed, looked at the still Alex, and whimpered a little. and suddenly started barking loudly. In a panic. Leaping onto the bed, he pushed at his owner with his muzzle and pulled on his arm with his teeth. The dog’s eyes were filled with fear. and confidence.
Then the doctors saw something odd.
“What’s happening?” Startled, the nurse asked.
“Calm the dog down!” an employee yelled.
But at that moment, one of the doctors froze.
His hand moved, so hold on!
— GET THE ECG! — shouted another.
After a moment, the monitor switched back on. A weak but distinct signal. Alex’s heart began to race again.
The doctors rushed in. adrenaline, oxygen, and defibrillator. There was very little possibility. But he came back. He was still alive.
The dog remained on the bed, his muzzle resting on his owner’s breast. The desperation was gone from his eyes. It was replaced by hope.
That evening, nobody on the staff could stop crying. Because a man who everyone thought was already lost had been saved by instinct, love, and loyalty.
