A woman requested that my dog and I get off the plane after insulting us, but then something unexpected happened
I had to fly back to my parents’ place recently. Due to a severe accident that left me with post-traumatic stress disorder, I constantly carry a trained service dog. This trained dog can not only be a friend but also recognize fear cues, regulate my breathing, and prevent me from “drowning” during an anxiety episode. I simply couldn’t cope without it.
We calmly took our seats on the aircraft, me by the window and the dog at my feet, as all the rules demanded. But the quiet didn’t last long.
A middle-aged woman with a sour look on her face abruptly stopped when she saw the puppy. Loudly, she announced to the entire cabin:
— Are you serious? I’m not sitting next to that filthy dog.
“This is a trained medical animal,” I said calmly. – It will remain at my feet for the duration of the flight. It’s not dirty either.
She snorted, “That’s disgusting.” – Dog owners ought to select an alternative seating spot. What happens if I’m allergic? Put your puppy in the cargo hold.
I almost burst into tears. An airline worker approached our row.
“Is something wrong?” she said quietly.
“Yes!” exclaimed the woman. There’s a dog here. Due of my allergies, I don’t feel secure.
The flight attendant explained in a calm but firm way:
Ma’am, this is a qualified service dog. It has every right to be on board. And it’ll stay here, too.
“I don’t care about the rules,” the woman shouted. It could bite! I want her and the dog removed from the aircraft.
The dog displayed composure, which is the perfect trait of a well-trained animal. I could also sense that my breathing was becoming more difficult. The panic was intensifying. The flight attendant asked quietly:
— Do you possess any documents?
With trembling hands, I handed over the dog’s papers and certificate. As she read them, she smiled.
Thank you. Everything is fine. Feel free to stay.
The woman rolled her eyes
Fantastic. Even her appearance isn’t that of a real service dog!
The flight attendant assured them that she was. — If you’d like, we can find you another, or you can sit down.
— I don’t need to move! The animal belongs to her!
With a composed yet strong response, the flight attendant said, “Then, ma’am, you may stay following the rules.” We can also take you out.
After something completely unexpected happened at that same moment, the woman truly felt bad about all of her comments and insults. I’m hoping we made the right choice.
The pilot came over to us. His face was stern and he spoke aggressively:
Do you actually have a dog allergy? Could you provide proof?
The woman hesitated, then muttered:
— No. I’m not required to sit next to a dog if I don’t want to.
“In that case, I ask you to leave the plane,” he replied icily. — There won’t be any flights for you today. I’ll personally make sure you never fly with our airline again as well.
Cheers broke out in the cabin. Someone even shouted, “Bravo!”
No one was listening as the woman started to rant, accusing, threatening, and using foul language. She was furious yet completely isolated. They removed her from the plane.
I continued to sit with my hand on my dog’s cozy back. He was still sleeping soundly at my feet, as he should have.
