Our dog was barking and staring at the bedroom wall, keeping us up, so we had to call a builder and have the wall knocked down
When my husband, our child, and I moved into the new house, it was like a dream come true. Despite its age, the house featured large rooms, a cozy garden, and enormous windows overlooking the forest. We fell in love with it at first sight. It felt like the beginning of a happy new chapter in our lives.
Rada, our Doberman, seemed happy at first. She ran through the house with delight, looking everywhere. But almost immediately we observed something strange: she sat in the same spot in the bedroom every day and looked at the wall for a long time, quite thoughtfully. Sometimes she would sit quietly, but more often she would bark, snarl, and even scratch her paws across the wallpaper.
In other rooms, she was perfectly normal. We thought it was a reaction to the exercise or a quirk. But with time, Rada’s behavior grew more and more consistent. When she woke us up at night with her barking, she continued to stare at the same wall.
At first, we tried to calm her down. Then we chastised her. But nothing helped. The question, “Why does this wall aggravate our dog so much?” suddenly crossed our minds after a long night of insomnia and growing anxiety.
We called in a familiar builder to carefully dismantle a section of the wall. We froze in fear as we saw what was behind the wall
Behind the plasterboard was a tiny technical aperture. A metal box, darkness, cobwebs, and dust. firmly embedded in the brick.
When we opened it, our hearts stopped. Inside were bones, a teddy animal, old children’s shoes, and an incredibly old can of preserved food.
Our hands were shaking. We immediately called the cops. An investigation was started. It turned out that in 1987 a girl had disappeared from this house.
At the time, it was thought that she had run away from home because she was never found. The father soon left, the case was closed, and the mother died of despair.
When the girl’s case was reopened, a sincere hunt began for the person who might still be alive and in hiding.
There was never another bark from Rada. Since that day, she has never gone near that wall again.
