When I successfully admonished a woman who was blocking the aisle with her foul-smelling foot, the entire cabin celebrated
As I boarded the aircraft, I hoped for a peaceful journey. Everything was regular until I noticed a young woman sitting right in front of me. She was dressed ostentatiously, and it was clear that she thought the world should revolve around her.
As soon as she took off, she kicked off her shoes, putting one foot in the aisle and the other on the empty seat behind her. Her foot blocked everyone’s ability to stretch their legs or go to the bathroom. At first, people asked her to move it politely, but all she received in return was a bitter look and a hiss of annoyance.
Then she started deliberately ignoring the requests. A loud answer was given to a man who tried to pass:
— What is preventing you from moving?
It was impossible to shift around, but she had spread herself out as if she wanted to take the whole row. The worst was the stench coming from her foot. It was so powerful that a woman across the aisle hid behind her scarf and a toddler behind me asked his mother:
Mom, it seems as though no one ever changes their socks. Why is that?..
I waited as long as I could. However, I later realized that this couldn’t go on and that I needed to chastise this rude woman.
I pressed the call button for the flight attendant.
“Pardon me, but this passenger is blocking the aisle and refusing to move her foot,” I remarked. Maybe she should pay for this seat because she’s using it?
She received a polite but firm scolding from the flight attendant. The woman rolled her eyes and muttered:
But I’m not seated here. I’m not going to pay you. There are certain privileges to which I am entitled.
The tourist next to her then heard everything and said:
You can’t just take someone else’s seat like that. The payout may be formally announced. I can videotape it if she chooses not to.
The woman’s expression turned pale. The flight attendant took the opportunity to summon the purser.
She was ultimately obliged to pay the current amount for the extra seat. It was almost as much as her own ticket. Then, for the first time, she sat down normally.
When the flight attendant left, there was a polite round of applause from the back of the cabin. While everyone smiled and exchanged glances, the woman on the other side of me silently said:
Thank you. And I was getting impatient.
