Something strange happened when we decided to follow a German shepherd one day who had been pleading for food before heading out with a sack in its jaws.
We saw this German shepherd in a city park a few weeks ago. Untidy but with keen, keen eyes, it came every day at nearly the same hour. It had an old paper bag in its mouth and looked at people with a pleading look. Many people filled the bag with bread, sausages, or buns because they felt sorry for it.
However, it seemed strange that the dog itself didn’t eat anything. As soon as it had the food, it left without stopping, heading deeper into the park and disappearing into the trees.
After a while, we were interested after first paying little attention. Where were all those sweets going? Why wasn’t it eating? It seemed like it was hungry. In the end, curiosity won out, and we decided to follow it.
That night, we were amazed by what we witnessed when we followed the German shepherd.
Before moving toward an old, long-abandoned mansion on the fringe of the park, it wandered for a while down winding trails. The rotting windows and the shattered roof told us that someone was inside.
When the dog came in with the package in its mouth, a man’s voice could be heard in the background.
As we entered, we saw a thin, haggard-faced man who was barely able to move because of a rough bandage on his leg.
The German shepherd walked up to him and carefully dropped the food bag in front of his hands. The man looked at the dog as if it were the only person he had.
The man told us that a few weeks before, he had witnessed a pack of stray dogs attack this German shepherd at night.
He was still badly bitten in the leg by one of the dogs, but he wasn’t afraid to step in and chase them away. After that, he was hardly able to move, and as he had nowhere to live, he ended himself in the deserted house.
The German shepherd started bringing the bag to people and coming back with all the food for the man, as if he realized that he couldn’t gather it for himself. It didn’t eat a crumb and gave its all to its rescuer.
Our hearts sank. We helped the man escape the abandoned house, called for help, treated his injuries, and found him a temporary shelter.
For the dog, we bought a big bag of food and gave it food and water. Finally, for the first time in many days, it allowed itself to eat.
However, throughout our entire visit, it remained at the man’s side.
