My peace has been irrevocably ruined by what you requested in exchange for saving the lives of my wife and our unborn child.
The man’s voice trailed off. As he stood in front of multiple cameras, he was unable to control his tears.
In front of them stood a stout businessman whose face was often featured on the front of business journals. His aura had always been one of indestructibility.
But now he was just a husband, and he had almost lost what he valued most.
The event happened on a Zurich to Barcelona flight. My wife and I had gone on a brief excursion to change the scenery, relax by the sea, and give her some time to rest before the delivery.
She was seven months along in her pregnancy. Before that, we had suffered two miscarriages, and each time the pain was unbearable. This child was our last hope.
During the flight, she suddenly became pale, gripped her stomach, and mumbled in a strained voice that she was having trouble breathing. Everything happened in a few seconds.
I shouted for the flight attendant and begged for help, not knowing what to do. The captain ordered for an emergency landing, but we were still a long way from the nearest airport.
Then a teenager from the back row, sixteen years old, stood up. Calm yet confident, he took a step forward and began to move.
It found out that he had done a first-aid course and wanted to be a doctor. His hands did not waver. He was able to monitor her breathing, manage the situation until specialists arrived, and reduce her agony.
He is the reason my wife and child are still alive. The medics said that if he hadn’t intervened, the result may have been fatal.
And I found him the next day. I wanted to thank him and promised him money, an education, and a personal scholarship.․․
Despite his rejection, he thanked me.
“If you really want to help, start a foundation,” he suggested. Not for me. For people like me, my sister. Brilliant and talented, yet forgotten.
Following the passing of our parents, we had been residing with our grandma. My sister has all the resources she needs to achieve her academic objectives, with the exception of money. She is like hundreds of others. Thousands. A chance is all they need.
I said nothing. This child had nothing, so he didn’t ask for anything. And for the first time, despite having everything, I truly paid attention to the pain of another person.
Today, we are laying the groundwork for low-income kids to have access to education regardless of their financial circumstances. This is not an act of kindness. It’s an act of justice.
Heroes don’t necessarily wear uniforms or stand on stages. Without thinking about themselves, they just take the next seat on an airplane and save a life. All they ask is that people be allowed to live with respect in return.
