The service dog jumped onto a pram at the airport. What it showed chilled everyone to the bone.
The pale glare of neon lights cast a chilling atmosphere over Narven Airport’s Terminal C. Officer Lucien Varga was patrolling the boarding area with Lyra, a proud German shepherd with a smooth black coat. Three years of cooperation with no problems. A team to be feared, even worshipped.
As usual, Lucien was assiduously inspecting passengers. But that night, everything was different.
Lyra came to a complete halt. She paused and gazed at a woman driving a colorful blanket-covered stroller. Her nostrils flared wildly. After that, she roared loudly from her chest.
Lucien thought the tension in the air increased. The odd, distant sounds coming from the terminal blended into the background. The scrawny, nervous-looking woman clutched the stroller and screamed in fear:
“What an insane puppy! Take that away from my child!
But the often obedient Lyra ignored her handler’s command. She sprang without hesitation, landing her paws on the stroller. The blanket slipped off.
Then total shock.
There was no baby.
Instead, an insulated bag was sandwiched between the cushions. Labels bearing biohazard symbols in Cyrillic and Chinese lettering were attached. Small, tightly-sealed silver vials had a distinct chemical odor.
Lucien grabbed the woman and pulled her away without hesitation. Lyra stayed still and stared at the bag. Another police officer hurried to sound the alarm.
— “Where is the child? What in the world is this?” Lucien shouted.
The woman broke down in tears:
— “There was no child. They told me to smuggle this in secret. I don’t know what that is.
The area was immediately roped off. Quickly, specialized personnel arrived. Experts handled the crates with extreme caution. The investigation revealed a worldwide smuggling network of extremely dangerous biological products. The samples were intended for an illegal laboratory somewhere in Western Europe.
Even the smallest leak may have led to a serious health disaster.
The woman was seduced by a large sum of money, but she had no idea what she was carrying. She had been convinced that she was traveling with a sleeping baby in order to “avoid questions.”
The story made headlines everywhere. The courageous dog, Lyra, was praised across the country. Thank-you notes came in the thousands.
Lucien just stated:
