Her husband used to beat her frequently, so she took her children and ran away from home

In a culture where domestic abuse has left many people living in fear, it is disheartening to observe how many families face difficulties.

The harsh reality is that some people are afraid to leave abusive relationships and start again. However, within these challenges, stories of extraordinary resilience and perseverance emerge.

One such story is that of Cara Brookins, a mother of four who chose to embark on an amazing journey that would permanently change her family’s course in life despite having little money.

Cara Brookins yearned to give her four children a safer home after enduring a violent and domineering relationship for many years.

However, the Arkansas woman knew she couldn’t afford a house big enough to accommodate everyone. In 2008, Cara made a choice that would alter her life in ways she never would have predicted. Fearful yet determined, she took her children and settled into a little house outside Little Rock, Arkansas.

On our drive to a cabin we leased for Thanksgiving, we passed a house that had been devastated by a tornado. “It was a dream home that revealed itself,” recalls Cara in an interview with THV11.

Cara dreamed of a better life for herself and her children inside those walls. Even though she couldn’t afford to buy a house, she believed she could build one with a little help. Cara built her 3,500-square-foot home from the ground up, ensuring sure every child had a room, because she was determined to change.

With no prior construction knowledge, Cara and her children turned to local craftspeople and YouTube tutorials for guidance. With the support of friends and family, they began the challenging process of designing their dream home.
