Princess Diana’s former driver has come forward for the first time in decades to claim that if he had driven that night, she would still be alive today. 27 years later, the mystery and intrigue surrounding her murder are still very much alive and well, and many people are still interested in what happened on that fatal day in Paris. The 36-year-old Princess of Wales died from injuries she suffered in the early hours of August 31, 1997.

The Royal Family member was in a car in Paris early in the morning with her lover, director Dodi Fayed, Diana’s driver, Henri Paul, and Fayed’s bodyguard, Trevor Rees-Jones. A terrible tragedy occurred when nine journalists followed the vehicle through the Pont de l’Alma underpass. When Paul lost control of the automobile and struck a column in the underpass, Diana and Rees-Jones suffered severe injuries, but Paul murdered himself and Fayed instantly. As rescue officials rushed to the site to gather the injured and take them to the hospital, a firefighter heard Diana’s last words, “Oh my God, what’s happened?”

The former British Princess tragically passed away in the hospital at 4 a.m.
However, Princess Diana’s former driver responded to the sad event by saying, “I would have taken a bullet for Diana.” My work was the center of my existence. No matter what, I was there for her. I had to start over after pursuing my dream job. “All I know is that she would still be here today… because if life had gone in a different direction and I had been driving her that night in Paris, I would have kept her safe,” he said. Steve expressed his indescribable grief over Princess Diana’s death.

He described how he was demoted after eight years of service in the army. He had been wondering why, but it wasn’t until he saw Netflix’s The Crown series that he finally understood. Journalist Martin Bashir tried to gain Diana’s trust by spreading suspicions about the driver prior to his notorious Panorama interview. He informed her that Steve had provided information about her to the media. Fortunately, Bashir’s unfounded charges led to Steve getting paid in May of this year. Steve said, still not pleased, “basically, he told her I was a traitor, when the treachery was all his.”
