Have $2 bills? Their value might surprise you!

Do you carry $2 cash in a pocket or a drawer as a lucky charm? It’s time to take a closer look at those bills—their value may surprise you.

According to U.S. Currency Auctions, uncirculated $2 bills from 1890 might bring at least $4,500, while uncirculated bills from practically every year between 1862 and 1917 could bring at least $1,000. The webpage for the auction states that rates are provided by collectors depending on a number of factors, such as location and type of printing.

Current bills could also be quite expensive; at auction in 2022, a $2 bill from 2003 brought in $2,400. The largest numismatic auction house in the world, Heritage Auctions, was offering this particular bill for sale. It had an extremely low serial number for the 2003 series. It was later sold for $4,000.

Exists a unique $2 bill?

The amount of $2 bills in circulation in 2022, according to Federal Reserve data, was minuscule when compared to the $54.1 billion in total currency that was in circulation at the same time.

With reference to the $2 bill

The front of the current $2 note has the portrait of Thomas Jefferson, the primary author of the Declaration of Independence. On the back is an image of the signature on the document.

The $2 bill has a negative reputation due to superstitions and its association with illegal activities such as voter bribing. The US Treasury tried in vain to advertise the currency at the beginning of the 1900s. As a result, the government stopped making new twos for a while.

The bill was revived in 1976 as the US reached its bicentennial, and it remains in force to this day.
