Twelve of the alumni of the VH1 reality show have passed away since its 2008 premiere.
In response to the tabloids’ portrayal of addiction, Dr. Drew Pinsky launched Celebrity Rehab, as per a 2009 New York Times report on the show’s set. Pinsky, 65, was first against the idea of getting medical care via television. The addiction medicine expert told PEOPLE after the first season of the show debuted that his friend, counselor Bob Forrest, was the one who convinced him to get treatment, saying, “I am so tired of people talking about rehab who have no idea what they’re talking about.” They don’t know about the difficulties and addictions that famous people deal with.

A number of celebrities addressed their substance abuse issues in the Pasadena Recovery Center in California with Pinsky during the 2008–2011 season of VH1. Over the course of five seasons, Celebrity Rehab included well-known actors, musicians, athletes, TV celebrities, models, and more. Unfortunately, twelve celebrities have died after appearing on the reality show. Let’s take a closer look at their lives and the ways in which they candidly shared their struggles in an attempt to help others.

Dim-witted Shellshock

I find it humorous how life plays tricks on us. At the unfortunate age of 49, Crazy Town’s leader passed away in June 2024. He was well-known for being insane both on and off stage. Throughout his career, Shifty experienced a number of risky situations, such as comas and DUI accusations. How much drugs and medicine affected him was painfully evident. He once told PEOPLE, “I was going to die if I kept at it.” My aim is to stay clean.

His brother Paul remarked, “He was bigger than life.” He has affected my life more than anyone I know. His death has devastated me, and I shall always be in mourning.
Frankie Lons

Seeing their own mother struggle with addiction before giving in to it is every child’s worst nightmare. Keyshia Cole’s mother, Frankie Lons, had a difficult existence. That she passed away on her own birthday was such a terrible irony. Her daughter Elite Noel’s heartfelt Instagram post said it all: “My mother in a body bag on her birthday is the worst misery I have ever experienced! My heart hurt so bad.
Kitaen Tawny

Actress and 1980s celebrity Tawny Kitaen,59, died peacefully in her Newport Beach home. Wynter and Raine, her children, confirmed their sorrow by saying, “You gave her life every day,” after learning about her dilated cardiomyopathy. We know her legacy will go on forever, and we love and miss her.
McKibbin, Nikki

Remember the first season of American Idol? Nikki McKibbin? She passed died at the age of 42 from a brain aneurysm, but before she did, she was kind enough to donate her organs. Her husband Craig stated it beautifully when he said, “Even in the end, she is still giving.” A fitting tribute to a generous individual.
Jason Davis

The voice actor who played a character in Disney’s Recess died of a fentanyl overdose at the age of 35. He was a season 4 participant, according to his mother, who “had a true heart of gold with such a zest for life.”
Chyna

Chyna, a fierce WWE performer, died on April 17, 2016. The unintentional offender in her system was the combination of medicines. Her life provided as an illustration of how to publicly confront one’s inner issues while holding onto hope.
Mindy McCready

Beautifully spoken country music soprano Mindy McCready unexpectedly went away on February 17, 2013. On the show, she struggled with alcohol and opiate addictions, and her final moments were marred by grief after her partner committed suicide. A disastrous chain reaction.
Joey Kovar

Reality star Joey Kovar of The Real World: Hollywood unexpectedly passed away at the age of 29. Opioid misuse ended a life that seemed to be moving toward happiness. His sibling said, “He had turned into such a happy person,” with sadness. I’m still not really sure what happened.
Rodney King

The 47-year-old civil rights activist passed away on June 17, 2012. King battled substance abuse as a result of his intense trauma from the horrific attack he endured at the hands of LAPD officers in 1991. His death was caused in part by alcohol, marijuana, PCP, and cocaine; he was found drowning in his pool.

Actor Jeff Conaway from Grease hid emotional issues behind his well-known looks. The man who lit up Broadway and small theaters alike went away on May 27, 2011. He struggled with his addictions till the very end, but he found solace in his work and the people in his life.
Mike Starr

To conclude this somber tribute, Mike Starr of Alice in Chains overdosed on prescription medications on March 8, 2011. An open memorial ceremony was held in Seattle to remember the life of a musician who inspires others through music, bringing together friends, family, and fans.
