“Although it pains me, the truth had to be revealed. Imagine realizing that your daughter has been lying to you about her affair and then discovering that she is truly involved in it. Our lives have dramatically changed as a result of the decisions I made in response to this unpleasant reality. I’m currently struggling with the question of whether I was a bad mother.
“My daughter Amy, a single mother of two, experienced a breakdown in her marriage upon discovering her spouse’s infidelity. I thought that having experienced betrayal herself, she would never destroy another family. I was in error.
She told me a few months ago that she was having amorous relations with Stan, the husband of her best friend Martha. The fact that my daughter would harm her best friend in this way grieved and betrayed me, especially in light of Martha’s recent pregnancy.
“I believed that my sincere conversations with Amy had persuaded her to break up with Stan and finally tell Martha the truth. When she informed me the affair was done, I foolishly trusted her.
But recent events have totally betrayed my confidence. I have to make a really difficult choice. I now wonder, “Am I a bad mother for what I did?”
“I was glad and hopeful that this upsetting episode was coming to an end when Amy promised to quit her relationship with Stan. My assumption was confirmed when Amy stopped talking about Stan and even began dating someone else.
Nevertheless, I discovered that Amy was leaving in Martha’s car, which was being driven by Stan, last Friday when she dropped off my grandchildren before leaving on vacation. As I saw them drive go, my heart fell.
It was then that I realized Amy had lied to me and went ahead with her relationship with Stan in spite of her assurances. I was unable to sleep that night because I was worried about how Amy’s actions might affect everyone.
The following day, Amy hypocritically replied on Martha’s affectionate birthday message to Stan on the internet, expressing her love for the pair. I was so struck by the deceit that I had to take action.
Rather than going up against Amy, I felt it was imperative to tell Martha immediately and in person. I told her everything when I met her following her yoga lesson.
