Am I wrong for leaving a family dinner at an upscale restaurant?

Being liked by everyone is difficult, particularly during family get-togethers. This was personally experienced by one Reddit user, who posted about it on the AITA subreddit.

Love and Peace

The unidentified person clarified that they had consistently outperformed their relatives. They always made it a point to treat their loved ones to dinner whenever they were in town. Thus, they were unconcerned when their mother told them about a family get-together at a fancy steakhouse.

They were startled to see more than 20 people gathered at the restaurant, though, when they got there. The family get-togethers they were accustomed to included just a select group of close relatives. Their mother had even invited a neighbor they hardly knew this time. They had only received a few hello waves from the Reddit member.

To exacerbate the situation, each participant had previously bought pricey steaks, which ranged from $80 to $250. Even so, the neighbor of the grandmother made a toast, complimenting the Reddit user for being so kind as to pay the expenses. They felt taken advantage of by this sudden circumstance.

The Reddit user took action after realizing that their family was attempting to take advantage of their generosity. They declared they wouldn’t be paying for dinner and left $100 on the table before leaving the restaurant. They departed the nation the next day without saying farewell.

They were heartbroken that their relatives would attempt to deceive them in such a cunning manner, even if they acknowledged that their response to the circumstance was less than ideal. In an attempt to make things right, they made the decision to contact their mother and apologize for storming out. But in response, their mother accused them of being disrespectful, avaricious, and self-centered.

Considering the Reddit user had been exceedingly kind to their family over the years, this severe reaction was unanticipated. They had bought new appliances, renovated the bathroom, fixed the roof, given their mom cars, and paid for many family holidays. They encountered ingratitude, nevertheless.

The Reddit member took extreme action as a result of this. They stopped providing financial support to individuals who did not recognize their kindness and canceled a number of services. The Reddit user was not invited to a cousin’s wedding, and the majority of family members decided to become involved in the conflict. Even though there was friction, the family expected a gift.

The user’s actions received tremendous praise from the Reddit community, who agreed that they were NTA (Not The Asshole) in this particular circumstance. Many believed that by inviting so many people to the pricey restaurant and believing they would pay the tab, the family had humiliated them.
