They portrayed the devoted married couple Olivia and John Walton in the well-liked CBS comedy “The Waltons,” which is among the most well-known television pairs ever.
Their real lives were considerably different from the beautiful ones they depicted on the show, despite the fact that they were always surrounded by children and that every episode emphasized the value of family and love.
“The Waltons” ran for nine seasons from 1972 to 1981 and was a cherished family favorite.
Olivia and John Walton (played by Michael Learned and Ralph Waite) struggled to survive the Great Depression while living with their seven children, grandparents, and other family members in the made-up mountain community of Walton’s Mountain.
Learned and Waite had a lot in common when they were cast for the show. They were both from big families, and this was their first real break in the acting world.
Learned was born and raised in Washington, D.C., but she also lived a significant part of her childhood on a farm in Connecticut with her five younger sisters.
When she was eleven years old, she left England for Austria and went to the Arts Educational School, Tring, which is now the Tring Park School for the Performing Arts in Tring, Hertfordshire. It was there that she discovered her passion for acting.
But she wasn’t given the part for which she would become most well-known until she was 33 years old. Eleven years her senior, Waite was the eldest child in a large family that had grown up in White Plains, New York, and he also played her on-screen spouse.
Following his high school graduation, Waite enlisted in the Marines, attended college, and briefly worked as a social worker before earning a master’s degree from Yale University and being ordained as a Presbyterian preacher. He decided to become an actor, and in his mid-forties, after making multiple film and television appearances, he was given the iconic role of John Walton.
The two clicked right away, and their on-screen chemistry made them popular with fans right away. For her portrayal of Olivia Walton, Learned won three Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series.
Though Learned had a rough personal life, she was on television portraying the ideal family. She initially married Canadian-American actor Peter Donat when she was barely 17 years old, and the two had three boys together. Her next two marriages ended in divorce, and it took her sixteen years to find a genuinely happy partner.
Learned married actor-screenwriter Glenn Chadwick for three years before getting married to William Parker in 1979. Learned admitted in a 2017 interview that she had been assaulted at home by a long-term spouse, whom she did not identify. She stated that she decided she had to leave after realizing she could no longer “turn the other cheek” after being choked by her partner.
Waite assisted her in overcoming her addiction to alcohol following her divorce from her first husband, which was another challenge in her life.
“When the show started, I was drinking a lot, and Ralph saved my life.” Really,” she murmured.
She told how, on many an occasion, they would take their breaks to eat lunch at a restaurant, returning to the set drunk. After Waite “straightened himself out” and told her that she was drinking too much, she decided to quit drinking and traveled to her ex-husband Donat’s secluded villa on the California coast to sober up.
Waite went through his fair share of suffering, going through three divorces and saying the repercussions were so bad he could never think of getting married again. The two did found happiness with their most recent relationships: Waite to 20-year-old Kerry Shear and Learne to 12-year-old attorney John Doherty.
Despite their intense romantic feelings for one another, the actors kept their professional dedication to the performance to themselves.
They decided against pursuing the connection because they thought it might “get messy” and hurt the well-liked show, Learned clarified. Rather, Learned emphasized that they treasured their enduring friendship with Waite, who passed away in 2014 at the age of 85.
Learned stated, “We would have ruined our deep love for each other if we had gone the extra mile, which we didn’t.”
“That’s not what we did. Though we didn’t, we gave it some thought. We became a spiritual husband and wife, if you will, for that reason, I believe, and I miss him tremendously. His spouse is an excellent friend. However, what Ralph and I shared was depicted on TV.
Their friendship is evident on screen, but their decision to keep their sentiments to themselves shows how committed they are to a show that has captivated millions of fans over the years and is still seen on TV today.
