Just hours after fueling engagement rumors by appearing with a ring on that finger at the global Avatar: Fire and Ash premiere, Miley Cyrus finally confirmed the news and spoke publicly about saying yes to longtime boyfriend Maxx Morando. In an interview on Tuesday, December 2, the “Flowers” singer admitted that getting engaged at 33 still feels surprising to her, as she reflected on taking this big step with the musician she has been dating for four years.

The former Disney star shared that this relationship feels very different from her past ones. According to Miley, one of the most meaningful parts has been the ability to keep their life more private. She explained that she’s amazed she has managed to protect their relationship and be more selective about what she shares with the public. After her divorce from Liam Hemsworth in 2020, she says growing older has made her more careful about what she allows into the spotlight.

Although Miley made the engagement public during a red-carpet appearance with Morando, many believe the proposal actually happened weeks earlier. On November 23, while celebrating her 33rd birthday, she posted a black-and-white photo on Instagram showing off a large cushion-cut diamond ring, a custom design by Jacquie Aiche, which immediately caught fans’ attention.

Cyrus also spoke about how this moment in her life connects to the themes of Avatar: Fire and Ash, such as love, family strength, and finding connection again. The singer, who recently repaired her relationship with her father Billy Ray Cyrus, said the message of being stronger together feels very close to where she is now in her life.
