Shiane Hawke was only 14 when she walked onto The X Factor Australia stage in 2012. In front of the judges and a packed auditorium she looked quiet, nervous and almost overwhelmed by the moment.
Then the music for Duffy’s “Mercy” kicked in, and the shy girl seemed to disappear. The song needs rhythm and attitude, and Shiane brought both with a voice that sounded far older than her age. The audience started clapping along. 🎶
The judges watched the change with clear surprise. The nervous teenager they had met a minute earlier was now moving with confidence and owning the stage.
