One day I overheard my husband’s sister talking about me with his mother

After we were married, I made a concerted effort to get in touch with David’s family.

especially with Leah, his younger sister, who strikes me as a kind, outgoing, and composed individual. She often smiled, inquired about my well-being, and even gave me modest gifts.

But as time passed, I realized that her warmth vanished once we were alone.

Every time I spoke, she would roll her eyes, or she would go by me without greeting me. David would say, “You just don’t get along,” without interfering.

Last week was my mother-in-law’s birthday. The whole family, including aunts, Leah and her spouse, kids, and grandchildren, was there.

After supper, everything was going well until Leah got up and went into her mother’s room. The only person who noticed was myself.

A few minutes later, when I was approaching the entrance to retrieve my scarf that I had left there earlier, I heard the following by accident:

She simply presents herself as concerned. Actually, she wants you to give the apartment to David. Do you really think she bakes pies every week and watches the grandchildren out of charity?

— Really? She does appear to be a very kind woman, though.

— Nice? Everything is a performance. Someone who treats you well, flatters you, and then steals everything is someone my friend can instantly spot. You see, she’s going to start pressuring you shortly.

It sent a chill through me. I didn’t expect such betrayal. I had always tried my best to help my mother-in-law and had always shown her respect.

I never once mentioned inheritance, not out of politeness but rather because I didn’t really care.

Without anyone noticing, I moved away. But I was previously prepared with a plan.

The next day, I invited my mother-in-law to join me for a walk. We talked for a long time. I didn’t just tell her what I had heard; I told her how I truly felt. She listened silently, then took my hand and said:

— My dear, For a very long time, I have known. But it meant a lot to hear it directly from you. Thank you for speaking up.
