Parents Say Goodbye to Their Baby and Turn off Life Support

Lisa Hough and her spouse were going through what every parent fears most. Their infant child, Karson, was very ill and on life support in intensive care. Despite the doctors’ tireless efforts, the prognosis remained grim. They were told that there was nothing more that could be done to save their kid. When the decision was made to remove him from life support, they prepared for the unimaginable grief. But what happened next was really amazing.

Karson had fought a long and hard fight for his life. From the moment he was brought to intensive care, a ventilator assisted him in breathing. The medical professionals recognized that his tiny body was not getting better despite their best efforts.

The physicians gently informed Lisa and her husband that Karson needed to be freed. They said that he would likely only survive for ten minutes or less once the ventilator was removed because he was unable to breathe on his own. The Houghs were forced to make the difficult decision to say goodbye to their beloved boy and remove him from the tubes and wires that had been keeping him alive.

Although we weren’t ready to say goodbye to Karson, we had come to terms with the fact that it was unavoidable. When we turned off the ventilator and critical care, we were told that he would not breathe on his own and that his heart would cease within ten minutes.
