Finnley Patonai made a big impression from the moment he was born, needing clothes made for babies ages 6 to 9 months. What could have prepared Carey and Tim Patonai or their doctors for the surprise of their baby’s size when he came two weeks early? They knew he was bigger than usual during pregnancy, but still.
Finnley was about twice as big as a regular baby when he was born. He weighed an amazing 6.4 kilos (14 pounds) and was about 60 centimeters (24 inches) long. The 36-year-old Carey told Today.com, “He became the star of the maternity ward right away; everyone wanted a picture with him.”

The doctor said she had never seen a baby this big before, even though she had been working as one for over 27 years. She said, “There was a lot of fuss in the operating room.”
Carey and Tim had 19 losses, including two while Finnley was still in the womb. That’s why Finnley’s birth was especially moving for them. Their family was very sad about the deaths, especially their oldest son, who missed having a brother or sister.
Doctors say Finnley would have been about 7.5 kilograms (16.5 pounds) heavy if he had been born on his due date.

Also, Carey and Tim’s two older children, who weighed 3.7 kg and 5 kg, were also bigger than average when they were born. Finnley’s pregnancy was one of a kind. Carey said she had trouble getting around in her last few weeks and could “barely walk.” She said that long showers made her feel better.
Even though he is big, Finnley is in great health, has a big stomach, and sleeps well. “We finally reached our goal of having three children as a family,” Carey said. “Our much-anticipated son is perfect.”
