What at first I thought was garbage changed my perspective.
Yesterday, as I strolled down a crowded downtown sidewalk, I was aimlessly looking through my phone, barely paying attention to my surroundings, when I observed something odd. At first glance, it seemed insignificant—perhaps a tangled piece of cloth or an old hose abandoned on the sidewalk. I almost walked right by it, but I had to stop and take a closer look.
Leaning in, I saw a small grass snake, crushed and lifeless, and my heart skipped a beat. It was unsettling to see its twisted, greenish, and somewhat flattened physique. They didn’t look as they passed. Cars raced down the street, unaware of what had just happened.
However, I couldn’t simply look away. I could not get the image out of my head. It wasn’t just a city tragedy; that little serpent was a sign. For weeks, residents have been sharing bizarre photos and stories of snakes crawling through vents, through backyards, on balconies, and past apartment doors.
These encounters are becoming more common and taking place in unexpected places. Concerns have been raised by experts, and they are alarming. As cities expand and climate change accelerates, wildlife is being forced into new habitats. When green spaces disappear, animals have to make the difficult choice to either adapt or perish.
There has been an upsurge in grass snake sightings, but this is only the beginning. It is unsettling to see these animals in our cities, despite the fact that they are neither dangerous nor toxic. It acts as a reminder that the natural world, which was once disregarded, is now encroaching on our personal space and sometimes even knocking on our door.
