It was supposed to be the most joyful day of my life. And it was. But neither the vows nor the ceremony made an impression. When Elias’s eight-year-old daughter did something at the reception, everyone was shocked into silence.
I feel obligated to recount my wedding since I can’t stop thinking about it! Despite the fact that it was the most joyful and moving day of my life, there was one specific incident that had such a deep impact on me that I still cry when I think about it.
A brief history
Since I was a teenager, I’ve been losing hair. Wearing scarves, wigs, or caps to hide what I perceived as a weakness has been a drawn-out and excruciating process.
Eventually, I learned to accept who I am and to value my beauty. My fiancé, Elias, was really helpful. When he stares at me, I truly believe what he says: “You’re beautiful just the way you are.”
But there are other characters in this story besides Elias and me. Nora, his eight-year-old daughter, is also affected. She instantly became a positive influence in my life; she was happy, wise, kind, and very understanding.
Her mother moved abroad, cut all connections, and disappeared when she was three years old. Since then, Elias has done everything in his power to give her a secure and happy life. When we became engaged, I promised Elias and myself that after the wedding, I would formally adopt Nora. I wanted her to feel loved and appreciated.
The wedding day
When the long-awaited day finally arrived, Nora looked like a fairy tale princess. Her soft pink dress floated about her as she twirled in front of the mirror, beaming with joy.
But there was a problem: her bright pink knit winter hat didn’t match her outfit and was a little lopsided.
“Sweetheart, wouldn’t you feel more at ease without that hat?” Elias asked, raising an eyebrow in surprise.
Nora shook her head firmly and whispered, “No! It is distinct.
She looked at me mysteriously, and I just smiled back. Since kids have their whims, I waited for her to let me know when she was ready.
The ceremony went exactly as I had envisioned. Elias’s vows brought me to tears, and when I uttered mine, he squeezed my hands so tightly that it felt like an unbreakable promise.
Nora stood behind Elias, smiling as if she had a secret. Every time I looked at her, love filled my heart.
A surprising gift
I was engrossed in the music and laughter while dancing with Elias at the reception when I turned to see Nora standing in the center of the space. She had a ribbon-wrapped gift in her hand.
Visitors looked at each other curiously.
Frowning, Elias questioned, “What is she up to?”
“No idea,” I said, my heart pounding.
With clarity, Nora stated, “I have a gift for you, Maya.”
It was quiet in the room. Everyone’s eyes were on us.
I approached her with my heart in my throat.
“My dear, what is it?”
She handed me the package:
— “Open it. You’ll see.
After carefully untying the ribbon and letting the fabric drop, I froze.
Inside, there were hairs. Long and shiny, tied in a strong ponytail.
“Nora, what is this?” I whispered, my voice shaking.
“It’s for you,” she added, looking directly into my eyes.
I just stared at the hair on my hands because I couldn’t understand. Slowly, I looked up at Elias and then at Nora. His eyes glistened with tears. He nodded silently.
As she shifted from foot to foot, a tentative smile appeared on Nora’s lips. When she remarked, “Maya, I wanted to give you something special,” everything changed. For a love wig, that is.
I blinked, attempting to interpret it.
— “A wig for love?”
“Because I love you,” she nodded, her cheeks heated. I want your hair done with kindness, too.
Before I could answer, Nora took off her hat.
It was quiet in the room.
The beautiful long hair that had made her look like a princess was gone. All she had left was a pretty curly bob cut at her chin.
I covered my lips with my hands as tears streamed down my cheeks.
— “Nora.”
“I wanted it to be a surprise,” she remarked. “Daddy took me to the hair salon last week. They suggested my hair was long enough to make a wig. Now it’s your hair.
Elias stepped forward and stated, “It was all her idea,” in a tremulous voice. She came up to me a month ago and said she wanted to do something special for you. I thought it was a lot to ask, but she was insistent.
The only sound in the room was sobbing. I saw that many of the guests weren’t even attempting to hide their tears, so I knew I wasn’t the only one sobbing.
The applause for Nora then erupted throughout the room, growing louder until everyone was standing.
I hugged her as tightly as I could.
— “This is the most beautiful gift I have ever been given.” You have my deepest love, Nora. You are an incredible girl, and I am so proud of you.
“Mommy, I also love you,” she said, giving me a firm hug in return. You are my favorite person on the planet.
Since that day, Nora and I have been inseparable. But the story didn’t end there.
A few weeks later, Elias said, “We should pursue this further.”
I nodded and added, “As in, start a foundation to help people with alopecia feel beautiful.”
Nora exclaimed excitedly, “May I be of assistance? I want to make people happy, just like you, Mommy.
This led to the creation of the “Wig of Love” Foundation.
At one of the foundation’s events years later, Nora whispered to me, “See, Mommy? I told you that love makes everything better.
At that moment, I once more understood why she is the greatest gift I have ever gotten.
