“You’re fired, old man”: a young manager sacks the janitor without knowing he’s actually the co-owner of the company

Shortly after being promoted to general manager of a large fashion retailer, Nia undergoes a transformation. The young woman who was once praised for her ambition becomes a rigid, authoritarian, and productivity-obsessed person.

She calls a staff meeting less than a week into her new job to implement a number of strict new rules she calls “essential reforms”: flawless customer service, immaculate dress, and total punctuality. Any failure will result in the forfeiture of bonuses. The air becomes tense. The employees are caught off guard and cooperate without protest.

After all, everyone know Nia’s story because she went from intern to boss.

But anxiety gradually replaces admiration. Other rules enforced by Nia include the elimination of weekends, shorter breaks, and no sitting. The speed gets unbearable and even the smallest mistake is penalized. She believes, however, that she is doing what is best for the store.

When Nia finds a weary salesperson named Maya nodding off at the counter, it’s the tipping point. Without hesitation, she fires her right away. Victor, a 68-year-old janitor, then hesitantly steps in to help Maya. Even if he speaks thoughtfully and in a calm tone, this only makes Nia more angry.

“You arrive late every morning and take endless breaks. What are you aware of? You’re fired too! I would prefer not to hear any further explanations. The story is finished.

Coworkers watch in shock as Victor leaves without protest and in cold silence.

An unanticipated event flips the situation the next day. Mr. Gordon, the owner of the chain, makes an unannounced appearance. Concerned about the sudden drop in sales, he speaks with the staff before calling Nia in.

Her vague defenses and team-blaming haven’t persuaded him yet. But when he finds out that Victor was fired, he can’t keep quiet.

“You let Victor go? Do you know him? Victor owns a portion of this company. Without him, I wouldn’t even be here today.

Mr. Gordon tells how Victor, who was working as a janitor at the time, saved his life during a childhood mishap. As a thank you, Victor’s father, the company’s founder, gave him a stake in the business. Victor concurred, but only if he kept up his selfless and unfavorable work ethic.

Nia realizes she has gone too far and is in shock. Mr. Gordon gives her a month to improve her behavior, but Victor will have the last say. That evening, filled with humiliation and terror, she visits him at his home.

Victor greets her warmly and then offers her apple pie. He respects the company’s core values—treating employees like family, valuing people, and believing in their potential—instead of disparaging her. Nia is touched and finally understands her error.

She returns to the store, rehires Maya, publicly reinstates Victor, and vows to change her managerial style.

Sales rise, employee trust is rebuilt, and the environment steadily improves. Because of this lesson, Nia develops a reputation as a leader, and a few years later, she is appointed CEO of the business.

How about Victor? Because he enjoys and is humbled by his work as a janitor, he decides to remain dedicated to it.
