She gave me a terrified glance. Then she pulled out an old photo from her purse. She gave it to me quietly.
“It’s Peter and his twin brother, James,” she said.
Two tiny babies who were very identical to one another were standing next to each other. My eyes widened.
The fact that Peter had a twin was never disclosed to me.
Margaret looked down and sighed deeply.
“He is unsure. James died a few days after they were born. I couldn’t bring myself to discuss it. It was too painful.
Then she turned to Ethan and whispered something that gave me the chills.
“Come back to me; I believe Ethan to be James. I feel it in my soul.

In that moment, I realized that even though she truly loved Ethan, her pain had never truly subsided and was now affecting how she saw my child.
That night, I told Peter everything. He was equally shocked to learn that he had once had a twin.
“We have to help Mom,” he said after a lengthy silence.
The next day, we sat down with Margaret and gently told her that if she wanted to remain around Ethan, she needed to talk to someone, a therapist, about her past and her unhappiness.
Peter told her, “We understand your pain, but you have to start letting go of the past.”
We were relieved when she agreed.
The trip wasn’t simple. Through therapy, old wounds were revisited. But over time, her grip loosened and her love for Ethan assumed a more healthy shape.
After a while, I trusted her again. I finally got to see the kind of grandma I had hoped Ethan would have—one who was present, kind, and balanced.
Every family has difficulties, but with honesty, compassion, and a willingness to heal, bonds can grow stronger than before.
