Almost all of the passengers were on board. People were packing their belongings in the overhead bins and hurrying to find seats. It was immediately apparent that there was not enough space for a man wearing a gray T-shirt as he sat down along the aisle.
His girth made the person in the middle seat uncomfortable and partially obstructed the aisle for other passengers. Some glanced sideways, some muttered quietly.
A few minutes later, a flight attendant arrived. She politely but firmly requested that the man leave the flight for a moment in order to resolve the seating issue. The air tightened.
But the man stood up suddenly, turned to the crowd, and screamed so loudly that the flight attendant embarrassed and began to apologize.
— Friends, I know just how much trouble I am causing. That’s why — — he pulled a folded ticket out of his pocket and continued: I bought two seats next to each other so that I wouldn’t bother anyone.
Due to a straightforward boarding error, my second seat was given to someone else. We’ll deal with this now!
The flight attendant looked at the ticket in surprise, then nodded, thanked him for his patience, and went on to explain everything. The seat next to him became available after a few minutes, so he occupied both chairs discreetly and without disturbing anyone.
Furthermore, where tension had been present only moments before, there was an unexpected calm silence—and even a sense of respect—in the cabin. Someone nodded in agreement.
Someone whispered to their neighbor, “That was class.” Kindness and thoughtfulness are frequently the most unexpected things you see on board.
