Jamal Roberts, a Meridian native, led “American Idol’s” “Hollywood Week” performances on Monday night, March 31, securing his spot as more than half of the 144 contestants were sent home.

After making it through the audition round last week, Roberts, a 26-year-old physical education teacher at Crestwood Elementary, has joined “American Idol” season 23.

Roberts’ passionate performance of Anthony Hamilton’s “Her Heart” as she entered the “Idol Arena” on Monday night astounded judges Carrie Underwood, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie.
In a pre-performance video package, Roberts may be seen in his hometown tossing a fishing line.
“I was born and raised here,” Roberts says in a voiceover. Not everything is sunshine and roses. There is a great deal of criminal activity in addition to all of that. Things are getting worse. People are reluctant to talk for fear that they would be pointed at with a pistol if they say something improper. On some days, you don’t even want to go outside.
“It could be a whole lot better than what it is,” Roberts says in the voice-over. “So I’m hoping I can help clarify that.”
Roberts went on to say that he wants to inspire his students.
He said, “I hope the kids see me as an inspiration and learn to be themselves.” “American Idol is a dream come true, dude. At one point, I didn’t think I was good enough. I want to spread awareness and show others that good things will always come back to you if you persevere, act decently, and do well. Everybody is gifted by God.Additional details regarding Roberts’ path to American Idol:A man from Meridian gets a golden ticket to “American Idol” season 23. Check out his audition round.
The judges and audience were impressed by Roberts’ performance on Monday night, and they gave the singer a standing ovation.
Roberts’ first audition impressed the three judges, but they also pointed out that he needed more confidence. On Monday night, he gave them that extra boost of confidence and more.
“Somewhere between the last time we heard you and now, God has anointed you with something so fantastic,” Richie said following Roberts’ performance. “It was an amazing performance.”
Coaches Lionel Richie, Carrie Underwood, and Luke Bryan continue to go through the American Idol Hollywood Week performances in order to identify the Top 24 for Season 8 on ABC (Season 23 overall).
After 62 performances of “Hollywood Week: Showstopper” on Sunday night, only four performers—Mattie Pruitt, Zaylie Windsor, Gabby Samone, and Platinum Ticket holder Canaan James Hill—were chosen as part of the Top2 4.
After several musicians were removed, the 42 remaining performers will perform duets on Monday night’s head-to-head show. One of them, Jamal Roberts, a 27-year-old PE teacher from Meridian, Mississippi, took a chance with a country song, and it paid off.
He told the audience at the Orpheum Theater in Los Angeles, “I’m performing Chris Stapleton’s ‘Tennessee Whiskey.'” It’s not the same. singer from the nation. Not used to it. I’m stepping outside of my comfort zone. I want them to know that I have what it takes to be the next American Idol, so I’m giving it my all. I’m taking this action on behalf of my girls. You can achieve everything you set your mind to, and I want to show them that.
The judges did not provide any commentary to the artists on “Showstopper” night; instead, they had to wait until all 62 of them had performed before they could find out the results. We could hear some of their talks, though.
Luke went on to say, “He missed one or two.” He didn’t reach the finish line.
