barely long ago, Jelly Roll could barely climb a flight of steps without getting tired. In February 2025, he stood atop Camelback Mountain, happy, sweating, and 140 pounds lighter. Known for his soul-baring lyrics and terrible history, the top-charting country music musician has quietly undergone one of the most dramatic physical changes in modern country music.
Jelly Roll, whose real name is Jason DeFord, has always been affectionate. But these days, he’s also sporting smaller clothes. The man, who used to weigh 550 pounds, has shrunk and become more nimble. In addition, he did not follow a crash diet, have surgery, or receive glamorous endorsements. Just the hard stuff: daily commitment, mental toughness, and strong motivation.
Reaching the Summit of a Mountain with 550 Pounds

Jelly Roll relied on food for comfort and support for a long time. In movies and podcasts, he has admitted that emotional eating is directly related to trauma and addiction. “I was eating because I was depressed or anxious,” he disclosed. “I started using food as an escape.” After that escape, he weighed 550 pounds and was dealing with serious health issues and a growing sense of urgency.
By 2022, something had changed. Not for the fame, but for his family and future, he decided to take things seriously. He started walking. He hired a nutrition coach named Ian Larios. He stopped eating processed foods and started eating more lean meats and healthy foods. “It wasn’t some Hollywood cleanse,” he reassured his fans. “Just exercising more and making better choices.”
By the end of 2024, he had lost 100 pounds. But he didn’t end there. He started strength training, set more challenging objectives, and kept walking. In February 2025, he accomplished something that would have appeared impossible just two years earlier: he hiked Camelback Mountain in Arizona. “That hike was for me,” he said in a touching video at the summit. “To demonstrate that I could once again complete difficult tasks.”
The Elements That Contributed to the Difference

There was no trade secret to Jelly Roll’s success. It was the outcome of confronting the challenging aspects, starting with his mindset. He fought his food addiction in public, talking about it on stage and with his wife, Bunnie XO, who has always been there for him.
“She has been my rock,” he said. “When I wanted to give up, she kept me going.” The relationship between the duo has become a popular plot point since fans have been able to view behind-the-scenes glimpses of Bunnie’s journey through his social media posts.
His coach, Larios, came up with a strategy that put sustainable eating ahead of extreme restriction. To ensure uniformity while on tour, Jelly Roll avoided using fast food for meal preparation, substituted water for soda, and relied on simple processes.
Furthermore, exercising wasn’t glamorous. It started with roadside motel gyms and short walks around his neighborhood. Over time, those strolls turned into jogs, hikes, and resistance training. The more he worked out, the better he felt. “It was about momentum,” he said. “As soon as I saw change, I didn’t want to stop.”

Even though he has completely changed his lifestyle and shed 140 pounds, Jelly Roll says he is far from finished. “I want to be on the cover of Men’s Health by next year,” he assured supporters at a recent event. “I’m going for it—I’m serious.”
He is also looking into fitness challenges and 5K races. Not for influence, but to remind himself that he’s still growing. He said, “I have never felt better in my adult life.” “And I want more.”
Jelly Roll is not losing weight to conform to a stereotype; rather, he is doing it to regain a life that he once thought was slipping away. And judging by his mountain-top moment, he’s only getting started.
