Scotty McCreery is fostering a love of country music in the next generation.
Former American Idol winner and recent Grand Ole Opry member Scotty McCreery is sharing his love of country music with his son.
Scotty married Gabi in 2018, and the two welcomed a son, Merrick Avery McCreery, in October 2022. Their sons’ names have great meaning: Merrick is named after his maternal grandparents, and Avery commemorates Avery County, where Scotty and Gabi live.
The “Five More Minutes” singer regularly shares footage of himself and his son, Avery. Playing golf and singing together in the car are two great ways to see the father-son duo get closer.
The release of songs like “Porch” and “Love Like This,” which were written with his young kid in mind, shows that fatherhood has also influenced Scotty’s music.

Avery McCreery’s rendition of George Strait
In an adorable video shared on social media, Scotty and Avery can be seen in what appears to be a home recording studio. The toddler uses his cute little voice to sing:
“I’m sorry, but I think you have my chair.”
Fans of country music will be aware that this is the opening line of George Strait’s hit song “The Chair,” which was released in 1985. The song reached the top of the US and Canadian country charts and received a platinum certification from the RIAA. Additionally, on CMT’s list of the Top 100 Country Songs of All Time, “The Chair” was ranked number 24.
The video makes it clear that Avery was exposed to the classics. Scotty recalls listening to musicians like Merle Haggard, George Jones, and Conway Twitty when he was younger.
He asks his son, “Who sings that song?”
The clear answer from Avery is “George Strait.”
