After losing her five-year-old daughter to cancer, a grieving mother finally makes the decision to adopt another child. But when a secret her estranged spouse kept is revealed, she is forced to deal with a difficult situation.
Unconcerned, Eleanor tossed her Chinese take-out box somewhere behind her and shouted in the gloom of her living room. The noise shattered the silence that now pervaded her once-vibrant house.
After separating from her husband, Joseph, a year after losing her daughter, Ava, to leukemia five years earlier, Eleanor had lost her enthusiasm for everything, even her fine art photography business.
Even though Eleanor and Joseph had discussed trying to get back together, Eleanor’s primary goal was to become a mother again. Over the preceding year, she had spent hours on adoption websites.

When she discovered Charlotte, a youngster who perfectly embodied Ava, she exalted herself and let out a tiny yelp.
A few more minutes later, Eleanor grabbed her phone and clicked to see more of her photos from Grace Adoption Services.
“Hello, this is Grace Adoption Services. Samantha is my name. Now, how can I assist you? The phone was answered by a pleasant voice.
My name is Eleanor. I’m interested in adopting a little girl I saw on your website,” she continued, scratching her head.
Samantha gave a quiet response. “We’ll arrange for you to come see us and have a meeting. This should always be done in person.
Eleanor gave an early nod. “I’m ready to take that step,” she added. “I want to make a difference in a child’s life.”
Samantha laughed and set up a meeting. Eleanor hung up with a ray of hope in her chest for the first time in years.
On the day of the appointment, Eleanor found herself waiting tensely at Samantha’s office.
Samantha greeted her warmly and said, “It’s great to meet you in person.” “After reading your application, I have no doubt that you would be an excellent parent.”
The two ladies discussed Eleanor’s past, the reasons behind her adoption, and her goals for the future. Eleanor often looked at the family portrait on Samantha’s desk.
“Ah, you’ve been eyeing that for a while,” Samantha said, introducing her two children, Mary Ellen and Macy May.
“I would like that to return,” Eleanor murmured.
Samantha nodded while clearing her throat. Taking a deep breath, she said, “Can you tell me a little about your husband?” It is essential to adopt children into a two-parent household.
Eleanor explained that their separation resulted from her wish for a reconciliation and the death of their daughter. “I haven’t told him yet, but I will tell him about my adoption attempt,” she revealed.
Samantha suggested that Eleanor talk to Joseph regarding the adoption and expressed her want to meet him if he was amenable. She agreed to try it and then went to the internet to get the girl’s file. Her name was Charlotte.
“She looks like a wonderful girl,” Eleanor said, wiping away the tears in her eyes. I can identify with her in some way. It felt like she was meant to be in my life.
Eleanor left the agency an hour later, full of optimism. In the weeks that followed, she prepared her home for a child by making the extra room cozy and welcoming.
During this time, Eleanor remained in contact with Samantha, but she was reluctant to discuss the adoption with Joseph. When Samantha questioned, she admitted to being hesitant.
“All right,” Samantha reassured her, “you’re still a great candidate.” It’s not necessarily a negative thing to be single. These are modern times, after all.
A few days later, Samantha called with some amazing news. They had set up a formal meeting between Eleanor and Charlotte at a park. She prepared for the encounter by purchasing coloring books and markers as a gift for the small child.
On the historic day, Eleanor arrived early and, holding Charlotte’s present, sat down on a bench. In the bushes, she searched for Samantha and Charlotte.
Before long, she could see them. Charlotte’s dark hair was pulled back in a ponytail, giving the impression that she was shy and restrained. Eleanor greeted them warmly. “Nice to see you again,” she said, shaking Samantha’s hand.
“And you. Samantha said, “Charlotte is here.”
“Hello,” said Eleanor, leaning slightly.
Charlotte gave a tentative response and briefly looked Eleanor in the eyes. The girl looked so much like Ava that she was startled again.
They settled down by the pond as they walked through the park. She gave Charlotte her gift. “I thought we could use this to write or draw about our day,” she said.
Charlotte accepted the gift with a kind “thank you.”
As they drew nearer, a bond began to form between them. The girl slowly opened up, sharing bits and pieces of her life in foster care. Charlotte’s energy and creativity touched Eleanor.
At a later picnic supper, Samantha explained the legalities and support systems behind Charlotte’s adoption. They all left, nevertheless, hoping that this would be settled.
As Charlotte visited Eleanor’s home, observed her new bedroom, and ate meals with her, they grew closer in the weeks that followed.
Finally, Eleanor called Joseph. He said politely, “Ellie.” “I’ve been thinking about you.”
Eleanor shot back, “I have some big news to share.” Would it be feasible for us to get together tomorrow?
The next day, Joseph and Eleanor had coffee and talked about the adoption. He listened carefully, then spoke reflectively. “I understand how significant this is to you. It’s good to see you looking so lively again.
She was relieved that he understood. “I can’t let grief control me,” she said. “We must not let grief rule our lives.”
Joseph nodded, understanding her deeper meaning.
Eleanor and Charlotte grew closer as they hosted sleepovers and even dinners with Joseph, who started to come around more often.
One evening before bed, Eleanor told Charlotte a story, and Charlotte opened up. “I have never had a better mother than you. I don’t want to go back into foster care.
Eleanor’s voice grew husky as she consoled her. “You won’t have to, my love. Your mother will always be me.
The day of the official adoption hearing was a significant turning point for Eleanor and Charlotte. Eleanor had invited close friends and family members, including Joseph, to join in celebrating this significant occasion.
As he finalized the adoption, Eleanor and Charlotte stood hand in hand before the court throughout the hearing. She gazed at Charlotte and wept joyfully, realizing the new chapter they were beginning together.
Joseph was invited to join them for dinner outside the courthouse by Eleanor. Come to supper with us tonight, Joe. “This celebration also includes you,” she continued.
“El,” answered Joseph, “I’d love to.”
Eleanor, Joseph, and Charlotte started to merge their lives over the course of the following two weeks. They talked about their difficulties and their unhappiness in therapy sessions.
They ended up having a lengthy talk after one session. Eleanor felt as though she was committing a crime when she stated, “Joseph, I know this isn’t what we planned, but it’s the path I need to take.”
Joseph cleared his throat and said, “I want to be a real part of this with you because I love you.”
Over time, Charlotte thrived in her new environment. She reminded them of their lost love and everything that they had to offer.
But when Samantha called one day, Eleanor was immediately put off by her tone.
“Eleanor, Charlotte’s biological mother has contacted me,” the adoption agency’s owner mentioned. “She claimed that Joseph was Charlotte’s biological father.”
“What? Charlotte might be Ava’s half-sister. Eleanor whispered.
But Samantha told her that they required confirmation immediately. “We need to confront Joseph about this,” Samantha proposed. “If he denies it, a paternity test may be necessary.”
“What makes her giving up the child significant?”
“She stated that the affair was brief, but she might want to contest the adoption if the biological father suddenly wants to be involved,” Samantha explained solemnly. “I just want to make sure that nothing will interfere with Charlotte’s happiness.”
Joseph was working in the garden when Eleanor hung up and left. She quickly yelled out what Samantha had said and insisted that he tell the truth.
At first, his eyes were wild and confused, but then he hung his head and admitted to briefly falling in love with a member of a support group for bereaved parents that he had joined after Ava passed away and they parted ways.
His eyes become averted as he uttered, “It was a terrible mistake.”
“You mean you could be Charlotte’s father if this woman put her up for adoption?” Eleanor questioned with a look of horror on her face.
I left the group shortly after she told me she was pregnant. She might have put the child up for adoption, though. Joseph nodded, squinting his eyes.
Eleanor simply put her hands on her waist and nodded, overwhelmed. When asked about a paternity test, Joseph responded without hesitation, “I will.” For this, I shall take full responsibility.
They took the test as fast as they could, but it would take days to get the results. Though Eleanor thought about notifying Charlotte, she waited until they found out and the legal matters were resolved.
She also spoke to Samantha constantly. “Once an adoption is finalized, it is usually irrevocable in most jurisdictions,” her now-friend kindly explained.
The results were emailed to Eleanor a few days later, during the most anxious and tense days of her life since Ava’s passing. She and Joseph had spoken about all of their alternatives and how this might affect them during treatment.

But until they learned the truth, they couldn’t make a decision. When the email showed up in Eleanor’s inbox, Samantha was there to visit them. Slowly, she read, “Joseph isn’t Charlotte’s father! God be praised!
Since Joseph wasn’t Charlotte’s real father, Samantha was able to verify a few days later that the biological mother had made the decision to end the relationship.
Eleanor viewed Charlotte’s similarity to Ava as a fortunate coincidence and a second opportunity for her family after learning this information. Because they now understood the value of every moment, her late daughter will always be a part of them.
