Kim Kardashian has once again been at the center of controversy after claiming that many people didn’t know who Marilyn Monroe was until she wore the movie star’s gown to the 2022 Met Gala.
Online users have responded adversely to the reality star’s comments, calling her conceited and dishonest.
Kardashian hinted in an interview about her now-famous Met Gala moment that by donning her iconic outfit, she introduced the iconic actress to a new generation.
“I think a lot of people didn’t even know who she was,” she said, referring to Monroe’s cultural significance before the event.
“I was really happy to have that chance at all and that Ripley’s allowed me to share this moment so that it would endure because that was the most shocking thing to me.”
She went on to clarify that she is aware of the significance of the attire. She said, “I respect her and I understand how much this dress means to American history,” according to The Express US.
In 1962, Marilyn Monroe famously sang “Happy Birthday” to then-President John F. Kennedy while wearing a sparkling, form-fitting gown.
Given that it remains one of the most recognizable pieces of fashion history, many find Kardashian’s statement all the more surprising.
Many people took issue with Kardashian’s remark, saying that before the reality star ever wore Monroe’s clothing, she was already one of the most famous women in history. Social media users mocked the accusation, with some pointing out Monroe’s enduring impact on pop culture, fashion, and film.
“Marilyn Monroe is, was, and will continue to be a globally recognized individual.” “Kim Kardashian’s dress didn’t change that,” one critic wrote on Twitter. Others highlighted Monroe’s impact on Hollywood, feminism, and celebrity culture, criticizing Kardashian’s comments as disrespectful of the star’s heritage.

Historians also shared their thoughts, emphasizing that Monroe’s influence transcends decades and goes well beyond her sense of style.
“Monroe’s films, personal struggles, and contributions to Hollywood have been studied for years,” one academic said. “Kim Kardashian was well-known long before she was born.”
Kardashian’s decision to wear Monroe’s famous dress caused controversy at the 2022 Met Gala. The gown was originally designed by Jean Louis specifically for Monroe and had only ever been worn by her. Critics said that since the gown was a delicate piece of fashion history, it shouldn’t have been altered or worn again.
The uproar was heightened by reports that the dress had been damaged after the event, including wear indicators and missing crystals. Calls for Kardashian’s participation in the incident grew even though the dress’s owner, Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Museum, denied any irreparable damage.
