He was called a “beloved husband, father, grandfather, and brother” by his wife, Helen Snell. According to his widow, Soul’s death marked the end of a “valiant battle for life.”
Later in life, Soul led a contented life in London with his soulmate, Helen, and enjoyed a prosperous household with his five boys and one daughter. Even though he was dealing with severe ailments, he found comfort in his loved ones’ company.

Among his health challenges were a near-fatal stay in intensive care and an ongoing battle with a severe lung disease. However, he frequently conveyed his appreciation for his wife’s affection and support, calling her a “wonderful woman, a truly wonderful person.”
Soul was a self-described fighter who faced his obstacles head-on and attributed his recovery to his unwavering support from his wife and his indomitable spirit. “I am a fighter,” he declared, adding that “I never would have made it without Helen.”

The actor realized that his riches did not come from money, in part because he sold Starsky & Hutch his portion of the rights for a small amount of money. He did, however, remark, “I feel rich when my six children are around.”
He spent more than ten years of shared love and adventures with Helen in London. “Helen is my life,” he would frequently declare, emphasizing the close relationship that got him through his worst moments.
Outside of his family, Soul was a fervent supporter of animal welfare and actively helped The Animals Voice in their campaign against animal abuse. His unwavering commitment to safeguarding America’s fauna was a reflection of his profound concern for the environment and the future of his seven grandkids.
